Rain, rain go away (MA) – 11/09/18

The rain continued to drizzle throughout the night.

It is a dreary Tuesday morning.

I am not sure of our chance of exploring Boston today.

Or tomorrow as Hurrican Florence is about to hit the South East Coast and we will get some of that weather. It could be worse, we could be in the impact zone.

A VERY relaxed morning in the RV.

By mid-morning, the rain had eased and after another load of washing, we packed up the motorhome and drove into Middleborough to do a supermarket shop. It was lovely driving past the gorgeous wooden houses.

Yes, this was the highlight of our day…

Computers, movies, mini-golf and a short bike ride around the park were the extents of our afternoon.

By late afternoon, the weather had cleared up enough for the boys to go for a swim in the heated campground pool.

The evening spent in the RV with TV, Ipads and reading.

Boston/Cape Cod KOA (MA) – 10/09/18

Where to go next? We have twelve day’s remaining on our RV adventure.

The end is near and we do not have too far to travel to our finish (and start) spot, New Jersey.

Although we are still enjoying the sights that we are seeing, I will have to admit at this point in our travels we are all feeling a little weary and are craving a bit more space (than the motorhome) and perhaps, a little time apart. The Browns have lost their mojo.

It has been over 6 months of living together 24/7, I don’t think any of us have been apart for more than a few hours…

It probably doesn’t help that the weather is cooler (and wet). The Browns are not too fond of the cold weather.

We left the campsite by 8.15 am and onto busy Interstate 95 South. It has been a while since we have been on one of these roads.

Through the busy outskirts of Boston, towards Cape Cod and onto our campsite for tonight, Boston/Cape Cod KOA.

Time to set up camp and let the boys have a play before the rain is supposed to set in later this afternoon.

A lovely run around the campground for me.

Soon the rain arrives and although not heavy, its consistency was enough to keep us indoors.

Lunch and the remainder of the afternoon and evening spent in the motorhome.

Cabin fever is beginning to set in.

Salisbury, Massachusetts – 09/09/18

Another beautiful coastal sunrise.

Another beautiful run along the coast.

All packed up and on the road just after 9 am.

A stop for gas along the way.

Across the border and into New Hampshire.

As we were driving through Portsmouth, New Hampshire we spotted a submarine and museum alongside the road. We decided to turn around and have a look.

The submarine was the USS Albacore, a unique research submarine that pioneered the American version of the teardrop hull form of modern submarines and served from 1953 to 1972.

It was amazing being able to explore a former working naval submarine.

Once we were back in the motorhome we decided to drive through downtown historic Portsmouth. As beautiful as it looked, this was not a place where a 30 foot RV should be.

We hightailed out of there as quick as we could.

Back driving south through the gorgeous beachside towns including Hampton Beach.

Across the border and into Massachusetts until we reached our destination for tonight, Beach Rose RV Park, Salisbury, Massachusetts.

Light lunch in the motorhome.

A lovely afternoon ride down to Salisbury Beach, past the cute beach houses and through the quiet little streets.

The weather is changing and it is is now very cool, summer feels over, the shops are closing for the season and it is beginning to feel a lot like fall…

More time to relax in the motorhome before jumping on our bikes for dinner at the Hungry Traveler.

Seaside York, Maine – 08/09/18

Up early and it looks like another nice day, although a little bit more chilly.

It is always lovely to see the sunrise but it is also lovely to have a quiet RV for a couple of hours while Noah and Wes are still sleeping…

The boys are awake, let the raucous begin.

Old Orchard Beach would have to be one of the most pedestrians and cycle friendly spots we have stayed. There is actually a bike ride on today,  The New England Parkinson’s Ride, with various distances, the longest being 100 miles and the shortest 10miles. Unfortunately, with my poor fitness and tank of a bike, I doubt I would even make the 10 miles.

After leaving the campsite at 9.20 am we passed through many cute, albeit busy seaside towns including Kennebunk, Wells and Ogunquit.

A quick stop for a supermarket stock and a short look around the small historic town of York before we arrived at our destination for tonight, Libby’s Oceanside Camp, York.

The campground is directly on the coast, although our site is one row back. At least we have nobody camping in front of us at the moment and have a gorgeous ocean view.

Hopefully, they will arrive LATE tonight.

And, they will arrive because the campground is fully booked. Which is lucky as one night has cost USD107 (that rate would normally give us a couple of nights camping), we couldn’t afford to stay two nights.

After setting up camp Pete went for a ride to an Antique Shop and the boys and I relaxed at the campsite.

Bum, 2.30 pm and both campers have arrived, hopefully, we can still view the ocean between them. Yes, we can, nice.

A walk down to the rocky Pebble Beach and then the Low Tide Sandy Beach for Noah, Wes and me. Lots of people out on the beach, swimming, surfing, playing in the sand, relaxing and enjoying the day.

And then a lovely bike ride along the York Beach and coast up to Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse for just myself.

A light meal in the motorhome for dinner and a relaxing evening in.

Old Orchard Beach (ME) – 07 September 18

A lovely relaxed start to the morning.

A few chores, a few arcade games and then a nice run down and along the beach. It is a beautiful day in Old Orchard Beach.

Back to the motorhome and then a lovely ride with the family down and along the beach, passing the gorgeous Maine beach houses and seaside villages.

We even stopped at Maine’s own Scabs (Scarborough Beach).

A stop at a small cafe for local lobster rolls and then back to the RV park to enjoy our delicious lunch.

Mid-afternoon Wes and I went for a small walk around the campground.

Then the boys went for a small ride around the campground.

Tacos in the motorhome for dinner, finishing with smores, marshmallows and a campfire.

A very relaxing day in Old Orchard Beach.

Yarmouth Portland Ferry, The Cat (ME) – 06/09/18

Another early morning getting ready for our ferry trip. We need to be at the terminal and at immigration by 7.30 am.

Today we will say goodbye to Canada and return to the USA (Portland, Maine). Canada has been very beautiful and going to Green Gables was a childhood dream come true. However, I did not enjoy Canada as much as I thought I would and I am not sure why…

Don’t get me wrong Whistler, well I could go back there and spend some more time in a flash 🙂

We arrived at the terminal at 6.30 am, one of the first in line. It’s the Matheson in me.

An easy ferry check-in and boarding process.

A very relaxing and quiet (the Cat was fairly empty) 5.30-hour ferry ride, watching two movies, reading a good book and eating.

The seas were also calm.

Soon we arrived in wet Portland.

An easy USA immigration entry and we were back on the road with a half an hour drive to reach our destination for tonight, Paradise Park Resort Campground, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

We set up camp and waited for the rain to ease.

By late afternoon we decided to risk the rain and walked down to Old Orchard Beach. Although still drizzling it was not cold and the beach still looked inviting.

As summer has officially finished and school started, it was very quiet with many shops and the amusement park only open on the weekends.

As we had all been up early, plus with an hour additional time change, we were beginning to fade fast. A walk to the supermarket to pick up something quick for dinner and a quiet night in the motorhome.

At least tonight we have cable TV which means 20 channels of nothing decent to watch, however, it is nice that it is something new.

Yarmouth (NS) – 05 September 18

Up early, a lovely sunrise and ready for a new day to begin.

The bus was ready to go and we were outside Seabrook Repair Plowing Services for our 9 am oil change appointment.

I took off for a lovely run down to the fishing boat harbour in Digby while the boys stayed with the van.

On my arrival back from my jog, the oil change had been done and we were ready to roll.

Our scenery today was filled with farms, seaside towns and lighthouses.

A small stop at the beautiful Eglise St Bernard in the village of St Bernard, Clare. A large, granite church of early twentieth-century gothic architecture. Construction on the church began in 1910 and took thirty-two years to complete.

I can’t’ believe I am using beautiful and Bernard in the same sentence 🙂

Today’s destination is Yarmouth, the town where we will catch the Yarmouth-Portland Ferry tomorrow morning.

Once we arrived in Yarmouth we went to a quirky diner with very average food for lunch, Jungle Jims.

Back into the RV and onto our campground for tonight, Camper’s Haven Campground.

We are all feeling a little weary at the moment.

A warning from the owner about the mosquitos and Noah bitten on arrival.

We may not be spending a lot of time outdoors today.

Around mid-afternoon, I decided to go on a bike ride to explore the campground and lake. After taking a couple of photos and being attacked by blood-sucking mosquitos I retreated back to the RV.

Leftovers for dinner and an early night.

Balancing Rock (NS) – 04 September 18

Our first job for today was to find a workshop to do an oil change on our RV. After a few phone calls and a visit to a mechanics, we had her all booked in for 9 am tomorrow.

Next, a food shop and essential clothing shop as Noah was beginning to look like a homeless child walking in his broken sandals. We all do look and smell a bit like gipsies…

Onto East Ferry to catch the Petit Passage Ferry across to Tiverton, Long Island. We just missed the 12.30 pm ferry by 5 minutes and were first in line for the next ferry crossing in 1hrs time. It was not hard to wait while watching the beautiful ocean, hoping to see whales.

No whales, however, it was soon time to board the ferry and take the 5-minute journey.

Once we arrived we made the short drive to the Balancing Rock Trail and had a lovely walk to view the Balancing Rock (a vertical volcanic column) and St Mary’s Bay.

Back onto the ferry, a small stop and wander around Whale Cove and then a return to Digby and the Digby Campground. We had thought about staying at the Whale Cove Campground, however, returning to Digby will be an easier option to service the RV in the morning.

Chores and schoolwork and dinner in the motorhome. A quiet evening in.

Labor Day, Canada & USA (NS) – 03 September 18

Today is Labor Day in both Canada and the USA.

Back on the Brown’s Tour Bus and on the road by 9 am

Last night at dinner (the tables were centimetres apart) I overheard a lady comment that at the end of October she will say to her neighbour “see you in spring”.

With the beautiful weather we are enjoying at the moment it is hard to imagine how cold it can get in these parts but it does. Freezing temperatures!

Our journey today took us through gorgeous little towns like Milton, past beautiful green farms, lakes, churches, deer and gorgeous farmhouses.

By lunchtime, we had reached our destination for tonight, Digby Campground, along the Bay of Fundy (a bay between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a small portion touching the US state of Maine. It has an extremely high tidal range).

Time to set up camp and have a light lunch in the motorhome.

We are staying in Digby as originally we were looking at catching the 8.30 am ferry from Digby to Saint John (New Brunswick) tomorrow morning.

Upon booking the ticket we discovered that there was another option. We could also take a ferry from Yarmouth (Nova Scotia) straight to Portland, USA. Although this is a 5.30-hour ferry journey it would give Pete a nice window of no driving while making up 500 miles or so.

After being misled by the pricing we still decided to go with the second option and will now have a casual 100km drive to Yarmouth tomorrow and catch the ferry back to the USA on Thursday morning.

After sorting out our ferry situation we jumped on the bikes and had a lovely ride in and around Digby.

Back to the motorhome.

Time for dinner. Back on our bikes and a return to Digby for a nice meal at the Shoreline Restaurant.

Back to the motorhome and you guessed it, more Modern Family. I guess it is a better option for Pete than Friends…

Aussie Father’s Day (NS) – 02 September 18

Happy Aussie Father’s Day to all of the wonderful fathers out there, especially our three, Pete, Bernard and Charlie.

Pete has already had a USA Fathers Day, this makes number two.

In fact, other than poor little Wes who has celebrated nothing except breaking his arm (and one lost tooth), the rest of us have had Aussie Birthday’s, USA Birthdays, Mothers Day (falls on the same day) and now two Father’s Days.

Wes will have to have an extra special Birthday in November when we are home. We did think we were going to celebrate getting his cast off a few weeks back, instead, another one was put on, at least it was waterproof…

A relaxing morning in the motorhome.

Mid-morning we went for a walk and explore down to Hunts Point Beach and Wharf.

Back to the motorhome for lunch and more relaxing.

Pete went for a short sightseeing bike ride in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the cars drive a little too dangerously on the thin winding roads to take the boys on the back. I am sure it would be a lovely seaside ride.

A 1km walk down the road to the very average, casual fish and chip shop, Seaside Seafoods.

Back to the motorhome for another Modern Family Marathon.

Probably not the most exciting Aussie Fathers Day. A bit of a Dud, Day.
